Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
