The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
